Gum Disease Treatment
and Periodontal Exams

More often than not, when you think about your dentist and your teeth, it’s your actual teeth you’re thinking about. That’s your first mistake, because your gums are equally important. Think about them like the foundation for a building. Without them, your teeth are in trouble. For this very reason, your dentist places just as much focus on your gums as your teeth.

Because your gums are so important, periodontal exams are essential when it comes to ensuring their long-term health. With a simple periodontal exam, your dentist can detect the early signals of gum disease and educate you on how to reverse it.

How to know when you need a periodontal exam

A timely gum examination will not only identify early risk factors for gum disease, it can also provide your dentist with the valuable information needed to help with conditions ranging from tooth grinding and sensitivity to receding gums, and other gum problems.

What our Dentists Look for in Every Gum Examination

  • The amount of plaque on your teeth
  • Any teeth that are loose or missing
  • Suspicious lumps in your mouth
  • Symptoms of Gingivitis
  • Pockets around your gums, and the amount of space between your gums and your teeth
  • Any irregularities with your gums, including color, size, or shape

“When should I see the dentist?”

The first sign of gingivitis is often swollen, puffy gums that are prone to bleeding when brushing or flossing.  When gingivitis goes untreated,  gum disease (periodontitis) progresses. If you think you might have gum disease, there’s a good chance your dentist will recommend X-rays. X-rays will help your dentist determine how far gum disease has progressed. Following X-rays, your dentist will prescribe a course of action that will help reverse gum disease and return your gums to health, which ultimately will help ensure your teeth stay healthy for years to come.
